England Vs New Zealand 28/05/2013 - 2nd Test - Results and Statistical Highlights
The black caps needed to do something out of the ordinary to get out of their shell as the problem has not been with them losing the match but about how badly their losses were. The Englishmen on the other hand were looking to go all out to win the match so they could get confidence behind their backs with champions trophy just around a week away. Lets now take a closer look at the batting and bowling performance reviews of each team.
England Batting (1st and 2nd Innings)
When the English batsmen came into bat during their first innings, the pitch didn't look like a feast for run getters as batsmen needed to work hard to score. The best highlights and the feature of their innings was Joe Root who scored his maiden test century as he made a score of 104. Apart from Root, the only other noticeable performance was Jonny Bairstow as he scored 64 Runs. After watching their first innings i can confidently say that their Younger players are taking up the responsibility very well.
During their second innings, England were quite confident as they already had 354 runs on the board which the black caps didn't quite reach during their batting, this time around it was England's seniors who showed some metal as Alistair Cook and Jonathan Trott made a score of 130 and 76 Respectively to set a massive target of 468 for black caps which looked improbable, considering they looked to be quite weak with batting.
New Zealand Batting (1st and 2nd Innings)
During the first innings the black caps were once once again disappointing as they only managed to make a score of 174. The best highlights of their innings was Peter Fulton who made 28 Runs, Most of their batsmen got a start but none of them went on to make a good score which they are so desperately looking for since a long time.
During their second Innings New Zealand were looking to chase down a target of 468, which was very tough. Ross Taylor, Hamish Rutherford and Tim Southee made a score of 70,42 and 28 to provide some stability but unfortunately for them this was way below what was required.
New Zealand Bowling (1st and 2nd Innings)
The black caps started off well with their bowling efforts as Trent boult picked up 5 wickets and was well supported by Tim Southee who picked up 2 wickets, but at the end of the day it looked like they gave away a lot of runs during the 1st innings which put a lot of additional pressure on them.
During the second innings the black caps bowling was dominated by the English top order as they were under massive pressure. They went all out to set a huge target for the black caps to achieve. The best highlights of their bowling during the second innings was Kane Williamson who picked up 3 Wickets.
England Bowling (1st and 2nd Innings)
The match was held on Headingly, Leeds in England. So, if you think about a team who will know best about utilizing the conditions it would be none other than the home team. It was evident in the way they bowled as they never let New Zealand off the hooks by containing them as well as picking up regular wickets. The best highlights of their bowling were Graeme Swann and Steven Finn who picked up 4 and 3 wickets respectively.
During the second innings their bowlers had a lot of runs to play with, New Zealand ended up succumbing to a brilliant bowling attack as they failed to reach a huge total as Graeme Swann and Steven Finn bowled brilliantly once again picking up most of their wickets as they won the match comfortably towards the end.
