After New Zealand lost the test series against England quite miserably, it was their turn to try and gain some momentum in the ODI series. The match on Friday kicked off with the New Zealanders winning the toss and electing to bowl first, It was a good decision for them to chase considering how poor their form in the test series was. Read on for the performance reviews of each team along with the statistical Highlights of the match that took place today.
Review and Statistical Highlights
New Zealand Bowling
The match started off on a very positive note for the black caps as they won the toss and bowled exceeding well to restrict the English Batsmen. Tim Southee has been a go to man for the New Zealanders from a long time and he did not disappoint today either as he picked up 3 wickets. He was well supported by Mitchell McClenaghan and Nathan McCullam who picked up a couple of wickets each.
England Batting
I must admit, i expected England to do much better, especially considering this was their home ground and they had dominated well during the test series. Most of the English Batsmen got starts but never went on to make a big score, which is very vital if a team is looking to set a formidable total. The only batsmen who managed to impress from the team were Jonathan Trott, Joe Root and Alastair Cook who made a score of 37,30 and 30 Runs respectively.
New Zealand Batting
When New Zealand came into bat they were looking to chase down a target of 228 which was not too high. They had the most horrible start as they lost 2 wickets for just a run but a partnership between Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor really laid a foundation for their remaining batsmen to reach the reach the target comfortably. Martin Guptill was the best batsman from their team as he scored a century and ensured he stayed at the crease until the end to see his team through.
England Bowling
England bowling attack was a little weak today as they did not have Steven Finn or Stuart Broad in their side, this meant the entire responsibility was in James Anderson who i thought did his job well picking up three wickets, but apart from him none of their batsmen were able to pick up regular wickets which was very vital for them to win the match with a low score on the board.
