This match was important for both New Zealand as well as Sri Lanka as ICC Champions Trophy is a short tournament and neither of the teams could afford a loss if they were looking for a chance to be in the semi finals. Sri Lanka's batting on 09/06/2013 was disappointing from the start as they lost a wicket of the first ball. None of their batsmen was even able to get a start apart from Kumar Sangakarra. Their batsmen fell like a pack of cards and bundled out for just 138 runs in 37.5 Overs with Sangakkara being the best highlights of their innings as he made a score of 68.
The Lankan bowling was absolutely superb, considering they were defending the target of just 139 they ensured they picked up regular wickets and were in the match throughout. The best highlights of their bowling was Lasith Malinga who picked up regular wickets but unfortunately his efforts were not good enough for them to pull the results in their favor.
New Zealand Bowling and Bowling
New Zealand bowling on 09/06/2013 was top class start to finish as they picked up regular wickets and never let any batsmen settle down. Almost all their bowlers were economical and picked up regular wickets with the highlights of their best bowling being Mitchell McClenaghan who picked up four wickets.
New Zealand batting started with an early wicket but then again, they could afford to do so considering their target was only to achieve the score of 139. Martin Guptill started off positively but they lost their way very badly in between as they kept losing regular wickets and at one stage it looked as though they might end up losing the match.
